[New talk] Bob Tait, Vice President of Marketing - Movidius

Our Keynote address this year will be delivered by Bob Tait, Vice President of Marketing - Movidius. Movidius, is a very exciting Irish fabless semiconductor company, delivering multimedia capabilities including High Definition 3D Video for mobile platforms. Bob is also one of the driving forces behind Product Camp Dublin - “a user-driven, collaborative unconference on topics related to Product Marketing and Management” - so he obviously gets the how barcamp vibe.

[New talk] Tangible Data: The touch, feel and sound of data representations

Trevor Hogan is a lecturer of digital media at Cork Institute of Technology and a researcher at the Mobiquitous Lab, University of Strathclyde where he is also completing his doctoral studies.

In this talk Trevor will present his latest research, which poses the question: does embodying data in alternative modalities contribute to an audience’s capacity to construct meaning and empathise with the data source. This research is based on the belief that alternative insight and meaning can be achieved by representing data using tangible artifacts, which can be touched, felt, heard, held, or even possessed.

He will refer to a number of data-driven artifacts that were created as part of this research as well as works by other artists and designers who have also created novel and unique data representations.

Trevor will discuss some of the techniques that he uses and give a live demo one technique, which aims to transform data from raw bits and bytes into three-dimensional data-driven artifacts.

The course of the last 5 years has seen monumental change is the gathering and dissemination of Geographical Information. What is it that makes this data special? What unique challenges and opportunities exist when working with ‘GeoData’, and what is the future of this rapidly evolving sector?”

[New Talk] Is Audio the Future or the Past?

Paul O’Mahony, an advisor to Cork-based In Hand Guides, offers the following description for this talk - “Audio is old-fashioned - superseded by video - a hangover from by-gone days when people had only conversation & radio? But wait a minute… There is another way of looking at it. Only a few can write well. Everyone can talk. Many dislike reading - most love the sound of human voices - most love to listen to stories. Video is expensive… Audio is almost free.”

Niall O’hOisin will talk about ‘Reconstructing the past’

“What can we learn from 3D historical reconstructions and what stories can we tell about the past using technology? What processes and practices are involved and how can we exploit this material and inform the public about our heritage.

We have used 3D tools to reconstruct Medieval Dublin, the Abbey Theatre in 1904 and Ancient Rome. We are part of a European Network of Excellence with other partners in all fields of Virtual Museums.”

We are also looking to run workshops, so if you’d prefer to give hands-on training or a demonstration please make a note to that effect in the submission.
